Unit 1: To what extent should globalization shape identity?
Unit 1 explores the many ways that globalization affects your life and your identity.
Globalization is the process of becoming more globally interconnected—the building of ties within and among the peoples of the world. Globalization is also the process of making our world more interdependent—the growing of mutual dependence among peoples, socially, economically, and politically. You will begin to form an opinion about the degree to which you want globalization to affect who you are and who you will become. As you begin to explore the ideas in the chapters that follow, you may discover that globalization has very long arms. It reaches far and wide around our world. It affects virtually everyone. |
Chapter 1: Understandings of Globalization
In this chapter, we will begin laying the foundation for our understanding of what globalization is. People have different understandings about what globalization is because their perspectives and experiences of it are different. We will learn about the different dimensions of globalization and have a chance to consider a few examples of economic, social, and political forms of globalization.

Chapter 4: Challenges in a Globalizing World
In this chapter, we will have the chance to look at some of the key challenges associated with globalization. Using examples from Canada and around the world, we will explore the impact of these challenges on different identities and the responses to these challenges. Globalization increases our exposure to identities and cultures from around the world. Each of these identities involves beliefs, ideas, values, morals, and ways of living.
