Unit 2: To what extent should contemporary society respond to the legacies of historical globalization?
Unit 2 focuses on the idea that before we consider globalization in the present, perhaps we should reflect on what effects globalization has had in the past.
We will explore whether or not these effects continue to be felt today. Do some continue to enrich people’s lives? Do some effects weigh heavily on the lives of people today? Perhaps, by reflecting on history, we can learn how to avoid repeating our mistakes and how to embrace what works. By knowing how globalization has affected both Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples, perhaps we can begin to know if and how we should respond today. |
Chapter 6: Cultural Contact and Worldviews
In this chapter, we will consider different perspectives of cultural contact. We will also look at some examples of cultural contact between Indigenous peoples and Europeans. As we do, we will have the opportunity to think about the effects of cultural contact and how these effects persist today. We will have a chance to begin to build our understanding of cultural contact as we learn about some of the different perspectives people have about the world and their place in it. As we do, we will come to understand that different cultures have different values, beliefs, and traditions that influence their thoughts and actions.

In this chapter, you will have the opportunity to explore the roots of globalization. This involves investigating early international trade and the rise of mercantilism, capitalism, and industrialization. How did these early forms of historical globalization lead to imperialism? What values drove historical globalization? How did it affect people? By answering questions like these, you will begin to form an opinion about appropriate contemporary responses.

Chapter 9: Historical Origins and Contemporary Issues
This chapter focuses on contemporary global issues that have roots in historical globalization and the policies of imperialism. Today, attitudes toward other cultures have changed, yet the effects of historical globalization are still with us. Social problems, such as abuse, alcoholism, and suicide, plague many Indigenous communities. In some former colonies, political and civil unrest, human rights abuses, and poverty continue to hobble progress. We will focus on the legacies of the residential school system in Canada and the ways in which we are working towards restitution and reconciliation.
